Think pink is our motto for 2021 - and we illustrate this in the s.wert calendar with 12 special cityscapes and buildings from the 12 Berlin districts. Architectural icons and lesser-known architectural pearls from Marzahn to Zehlendorf make you want to rediscover the city. Tegel Airport, the Mouse Bunker, the post mill in Marzahn and the James Simon Gallery are all there.
01 The first page of the calendar is dedicated to Tegel Airport in the Reinickendorf district. West Berlin Airport opened in 1974 and will close in autumn 2020.
02 On the second page, the Lichtenberg train station can be seen on a full moon night. What was once the most important long-distance train station in East Berlin is located on the border between the Berlin districts of Rummelsburg and Lichtenberg. Except for the Paris-Moscow night train, only regional trains run today.
03 In March, Spandau shows its mystical side. What looks like a sculpture from a place of worship is the air filter tower of the Siemensdamm underground station, built in 1980, designed by Rainer G. Rümmler, the Senate building director at the time.
04 The elegant swing of the photonics center in Adlershof by the architects Sauerbruch Hutton adorns the April page of the Berlin calendar and represents the district of Treptow-Köpenick.
05 The Marzahn post mill can be seen in May. The wooden mill on the outskirts of Alt-Marzahn contrasts with the serial facades of the multi-storey prefabricated buildings that characterize the image of this Berlin district.
06 June is a colorful month - the so-called Kindl-Staircase in the densely populated district of Neukölln was opened in 2016. The staircase at the end of Neckarstrasse overcomes a jump of eight meters and creates a connection to the former Kindl site, where art can be seen today.
07 The conspicuous fire station on Wiener Strasse stands for Berlin-Kreuzberg and adorns the calendar page in July. The building was planned in 1974 by Rainer G. Rümmler.
08 A view of Tauentzienstrasse in Berlin's City West can be seen in August. The long shopping street has crossed the districts of Charlottenburg and Schöneberg since 1890.
09 The Ullsteinhaus in the district of Tempelhof-Schoeneberg is pictured in September. The brick building in the south of Berlin was built in the 1920s according to plans by Eugen Schmohl and is now a listed building.
10 October in the Steglitz-Zehlendorf district gives rise to controversy. What looks like a concrete tank is the “Mouse Bunker” – animal experiments have been carried out in the building designed by architect Gerd Hänska since it was completed in 1981. Now the brutalist building is almost empty and the discussion about demolition or conversion and monument protection has flared up.
11 In November there is a view of the Colosseum cinema on Schönhauser Allee, or rather the former film theatre. Because in the spring of the Corona crisis in 2020, the traditional cinema filed for bankruptcy.
12 The James Simon Gallery by British architect David Chipperfield on Berlin's Museum Island is illustrated on the last page of the calendar in December. The visitor center between Kupfergraben and the Neues Museum opened in 2018.
