"It's better to build bridges than walls" - in the spirit of this African proverb, the Berlin calendar from s.wert is all about bridges. There are over 900 bridges in Berlin, 12 of which we have illustrated in our new calendar. As always, the calendar is produced in Berlin in a limited edition.
The title page shows the connecting bridge over the Spree, which connects the two parliament buildings Marie-Elisabeth-Lüders and Paul-Löbe-Haus. The bridge shown is only accessible to members of parliament and their employees, which is why the bridge is also derisively called "high official career".
Also in the government district is the Crown Prince Bridge, designed by the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. The Kronprinzenbrücke was the first new bridge to be built to connect east and west again after reunification.
The Oberbaumbrücke connects Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain over the Spree. The graphic shows the pedestrian crossing, which is built in the manner of a medieval cloister.
A covered bridge connects two buildings on Französichen Strasse. Until the end of the Second World War, the building housed the headquarters of Deutsche Bank, and later the GDR Ministry of the Interior. Today, some parts are empty, others are used by various federal authorities.
Two bridges can be seen on the July graphic – the Anhalter Steg pedestrian bridge, completed in 2001, which leads across the Landwehr Canal, and the subway bridge with a truss construction.
The park at the Gleisdreieck is one of the most beautiful parks in Berlin with an urban character - on 26 hectares it offers space for strolling, skating, picnicking and relaxing. The park, completed in 2013, was created as a compensation measure for the buildings on Potsdamer Platz on the derelict site of a former goods station. The graphic shows a view of the U1 underground line and Potsdamer Platz.
The Jannowitzbrücke, which was built in 1955 and spans the Spree, is visually less appealing - we like the view from the bridge to the prefabricated buildings on Holzmarktstrasse.
The Jungfernbrücke in Berlin-Mitte, built in 1688, is the oldest surviving bridge in the city. It spans the Spree Canal. The name probably comes from the fact that two "Misses" lived nearby and sold their handicrafts on the bridge. So the Berliners went to the Jungfern on the bridge to buy accessories.
